Innovative program helps young black men address health needs from diabetes and obesity to HIV and AIDS. While African Americans make up only 13 percent of the U.S. population, they represent more than half of the new HIV infections each year. In Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, which has the highest HIV and AIDS rate of any community in New York State, a new program is helping young black men ages 18–30 fight back. Called Keep It Up, the program combines health promotion and HIV prevention to help participants learn to take care of their health.

The U.S. Department of Education will extend to 2012 its contract with Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), to operate the Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and Islands (REL-NEI), one of 10 such labs across the country. Funded by the Institute of Education Sciences, REL-NEI is administered by EDC in partnership with Learning Innovations at WestEd and American Institutes for Research.

On May 3, Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick signed the state’s first anti-bullying law, four months after the suicide death of Phoebe Prince, 15, of South Hadley, Massachusetts. Prince committed suicide after alleged months of torment by her fellow high school students. Prince’s death in January—followed by media reports detailing the relentless bullying she endured before ending her own life—thrust the age-old problem of bullying back into the national spotlight, prompting the questions, “Why didn’t anyone stop the bullying? Could this child’s suicide have been prevented?”

Before January 12, Charlèus Louristan, Widny Laurent, and Modline Occy were working toward a brighter future by studying carrelage (laying paving stones) as participants in EDC’s Haitian Out-of-School Youth Livelihood Project (IDEJEN).Then the earthquake struck Haiti, changing their worlds forever. Despite what they endured that day, Louristan, Laurent, and Occy remained connected to IDEJEN, which turned from creating education programs and helping impoverished youth develop work skills to responding to the urgent needs of the community.Here are their stories.

For his contributions to mathematics education over four decades, Mark Driscoll of Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), has been awarded the Ross Taylor/Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award from the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM). Driscoll received the award last month at the annual NCSM conference in San Diego.
